even years now waiting to be fired
and always thirsty,
always pulling away from the
outstretched hands of others

waking up from a
dream of impending disaster

a shower,
a bowl of cereal, bottle of pepsi,
then off to work

bills like the iron fist of god,
always squeezing,
always looking for one last drop of blood

eternal,
like the starving

like the insane
and the tortured

do you see now?

we are not here to help each other

we are not here to cure the
common cold
or to reinvent the wheel

the men you’ve elected have
learned how to turn
the corpses of soldiers into money

your freedom of speech only
extends so far

all bravery
is punished in the end
