village of severed hands

victim found face down in a
ditch in the last light of all-saints day and
your father further up north or
maybe way out west

sends postcards of
sunlight and marigolds

sends rumors of his own
unexpected death but
when you call
your mother never answers the phone

the war drags on long after
the last village has been
burned to the ground

the days are never as hopeless as
you remember them but
we’re still a long way from home
