WAKE

The windows of
discarded buildings.
Blank stares
watching passing traffic.
People used to
bring the fibers
of the sagging shells
to life.
Ghosts are the energy
of melodramatic pasts,
bittersweet juice
pumping through bricks
and wood and steel.
Every nail that
held together dreams,
now just fashioning
planks and finish
into low-rent coffins.
