Get Me A Girl

Robert E. Jordan

I was taking a leak and nearly slipped
on the urine soaked bathroom floor
when I hear a slap and the little sister
lets out a yell, runs into the bathroom
and grabs hold of my leg.

She has a bloody nose and says
the old man hit her again.
I tell her to take off
because he’s in a mean mood.

I go into his bedroom and he’s sitting there
sewing up some curtains for the bathroom he says.
I say, why do we need curtains for the bathroom.
Says I’m going out and get him a girl,
and he wants the bathroom to look nice.

I tell him I’m not going to get him a girl,
so he can forget about the damned curtains.
He grabs me by the throat
and slams me into the wall
knocking over a vase of white roses.
He gets that way sometimes, very insistent.

He gives me ten dollars and says,
make sure she’s young.

I go out in the street
and remember the new family of German DPs
that just moved into the rat trap a few doors down.
No lights and no running water there,
so I know they will like some money.

She’s sitting on the stoop looking
hungry, young and blond.
I ask her if she needs to earn ten dollars,
she asks, “What do I gotta do for it?”
I tell her the old man
wants a piece of her ass
and she had better give it to him.

She says OK and I take her up to the old man.
He takes her cloths off, gives her a good ride,
and asks me if I want seconds.
I say, sure why not,
we tie one together through the back door.
She doesn’t like that much,
starts to yell about unnatural sex acts.

This pisses the old man off
and he picks her up,
throws her out the second story window.
So she’s lying out there stark raving naked
and I don’t know what to do.
I go down to the street,
try to drag her back to her place
along with the ten dollars.

She’s moaning and crying
when the tomato wagon comes by
and asks her what the problem is.
She tells them I had raped her
and thrown her out the window.
They always did seem to favor the old man.

They take me off and deliver the girl
to the emergency ward.
To this day, I still don’t know
what the big fuss was about.
