Cold Turkey
Dave Oakes
Fire burning through every limb
Parched with and unquenchable thirst
Longing for the next one to come
Wishing that there had never been a first.
Muscles cramp in an ever tightening knot
Shivering with cold while you sweat
Determined to win, but willing to lose
Never such a challenge have you met.
It becomes increasingly harder
No longer thinking you will ever get well
Feelings of things crawling inside your skin
No nightmare has come so close to hell.
Second turn into the longest of minutes
The minutes turn into hellish hours
With each sucking out your will to live
Like a desert sucking out moisture from flowers.
Consciousness is a thing long gone
The nightmare has become the real
Strength of will seems to crumble
As the creatures try to bring you to heel.
Just when you think you have gone too far
To ever find the road to get back
When your strength has been pushed to the limits
You see a pinpoint of light through the black.
If you have made it this far on the journey
Which only a few can successfully take
Chances of survival have leaped
And a new life you can make.
