Friendship
Dave Oakes
Someone to share you darkest fears
While helping you see the light
Knowing that you can trust them
And they will always treat you right.
The secret so horrible you couldn’t tell
Comes forth easily with this friend
There are no head games being played
No worry that your words they will bend.
The joy we get from life each day
Means more when shared with this friend
Fully opening yourself to know the trust
Of getting back much more than you send.
Some things need to be treasured
Beyond most of the things we see
And a truly deep, honest friendship
Second only to love should be.
Real friends are truly rare indeed
Although most misuse the term
To know someone no matter how well
Does not make a friendship firm.
Seems like everyone tries to hurt you
Using all you say and what they find
It matters not the spirit of the words
It’s just how to put you in a bind.
So beware of who you are calling friend
Until you know your trust will not be blown
I know I’ve searched for many years now
For the kind of friendship I’ve never known.
