Introspective

Dave Oakes

Once upon a sadder time
When I was feeling blue
I looked upon the flowers
They were of every hue
Blue and white, yellow and red
Every time we make a choice
Of one way or another
I have escaped death many times over
When others believed for sure I was done
I fooled them many times to my relief
Still waiting for the ultimate fun
I do not know if I’ll ever find it
All I can do is try
I will live life to the fullest
Sometimes I’ll laugh and others cry
I can only expect that which comes
And not worry about the rest
Taking each day one at a time
And cope by giving my best
This will never be enough for some
But I know them I can’t change
Listening only to those constructive
And tuning the others out of range
I try to live my life in such a way
As to hurt no other creature
But I refuse to let myself be used
As a fright night double feature
My place on earth is not to be
Finding a way to please the rest
Only to do the best I am able
And keep my efforts on the crest
Pleasing yourself must be first
For your soul is the one you keep
And when you feel right or wrong
Upon your soul is the fruit you reap
