Religion

Dave Oakes

I rarely discuss religion
It is too dangerous for me
To broach a subject which I feel
Stands in the way of being free.
Maybe I sometimes misuse the word
Because I guess I’m religious myself
I believe we are all tied to together
By some mysterious and hidden elf.
I believe in the power of the universe
To return to each of us what we take
And reward us somewhere down the line
For sacrifices in service to others we make.
Maybe I don’t mind religion so much
In the most cerebral sense of the word
It may be organizations of terror I hate
Whose rules are like the flight of a bird.
I grew up as a Catholic
An alter boy believe it or not
Which I why I discarded that church
When I thought all the hypocrites we’d got.
But other churches were quite the same
So I decided to try other religions too
I would have been spending my time better
If I had taken a trip to the zoo.
Perhaps in reality I did that
For there seemed to be a lot of animals out
Gathered at their watering hole
To socialize and shout.
I even checked out the born agains
Who claim belief in god and not religions is their thing
But if you disagree with their thoughts
They are ready to grab the sling.
It strikes me as a real testament
How many people have died over the years
Supposedly fighting in the name of their gods
With actions that to his words are not near.
To see so many hypocrites wandering around out there
Claiming a belief in a good righteous god
While hating because of creed or skin tone
To me is the ultimate fraud.
For those who believe in the bible
You must know of Adam and Eve
Only two people who have borne us all
What other tale can you weave.
How can black be less than white
If our parents were the same
In my lame understanding of genetics
I can’t see where the discrepancy came.
So talk to me about your religion
When you can look at me and honestly say
That you have not hates or prejudices
And when you speak you live that way.
