Silver Bird

Dave Oakes

There it is sitting out on the wide black path
A bird of prey waiting to release its wrath
Silently waiting for a large enough group
Enabling the flight to carry those in the troop.
This powerfully built bird with strength of flight
Often the difference between making day or night
Carrying many through the air to meet destiny
Will this flight result in death or will they walk free.
Here they come now spreading out along the way
If they knew what their future held, what would they say.
How many of them fear the walk down through that hall
Feeling as if trapped by those ever smaller walls.
Are there many thrilled, with thoughts of the sky
The thrill of the lift off overpowering the chance to die.
Heading down the aisles as they look for their seat
So many strangers together how come so few really meet
Looking out windows and getting themselves strapped in
As they prepare to take off they can’t help the grimace or grin.
Excitement comes to us in many exotic and different a form
Those things that scare, also excite us, our minds are deformed.
The roar of the engines and the blast of the flames from the bird
Let us prepare for a journey that is about to put into mind a word
That will see us through this trip without a scratch coming to us
Knowing that we make this trip with our protecting spirits to trust.
Unable to sleep because you have waited so long for this trip
Thoughts pass your mind, planning every moment so you don’t slip
You’re so scared to look like a fool, but knowing they’d care even if
You could fall down or be dressed like a geek and not cause a sniff.
Just smiling at you walking down off the stairs from the plane
Knowing that you have waited for this through the air and the rain
Walking into the arms of the one you rode the big silver bird to see
Pressed close together, your bodies melt as one, you know it’s your key.
Lost in the world, in a land you know so very little of
But safe and protected you float as if on the wings of the dove
Saying a silent prayer of thanks to that big tired bird on the track
Thanking it for bringing you to your one love and a prayer for a safe trip
back.
