Star Way

Dave Oakes

There are three thousand miles of stars
Between myself and my sweet heart
Feeling sometimes locked behind bars
But always knowing that it is a part.
As I look up and see each star in the sky
Realizing that my heart is as close as the star
Each star upon which I gaze before I die
Brings my heart much closer never as far.
No matter how many stars separate we two
All the miles seem to quickly melt away
The vast expanse of a million miles are few
Through emptiness to where I need to stay.
There are thousands of miles of sky
To bring my heart fully into my life
My heart again knowing what is right and why
Cutting away my fuzzy thoughts like a knife.
Each throbbing beat that pumps through my heart
Leading the charge toward the end of that gap
Traversing the unknown that kept us apart
Allowing me to wake from my empty nap.
There are three thousand miles of emptiness
Filled up with knowledge of what I now see
Embracing it and loving it with each caress
Having found that the emptiness isn’t to be.
What seemed like an impossible journey
And one that I never thought I would ever take
Has come to symbolize all I could hope to be
Decisions now easy that before I couldn’t make.
Thousands of miles and many bridges
Each one allowing me to continue the chase
Past the troubled waters and across the ridges
I need this so badly now I pick up the pace.
The thousands of miles melt completely away
It seems as if they were never there
The emptiness has vanished, fear held at bay
The happiness I found almost too much to bear.
