Twins

Dave Oakes

You once heard the story of Tianna
And how lovable and cute was she
But that was not the end of the story
It was only the beginning for me.
A couple of years went past that time
Thoughts of how nice a boy might be
When at last we got the word
You’d never guess how surprised were we.
We didn’t get just one little boy in fact
There were two and at one point thought three
No problem we thought looking at the scope
How much harder than one could two be.
Once again we waited for an eternity to pass
Before the twins could ever come to bear
They even tried coming out many months soon
But the doctors said too soon leaves a lot to fear.
So they gave her shots and bunches of pills
To slow the twins down just a little bit
But that only worked to six and one half
And then those boys decided they just couldn’t sit.
They were ready to go, they just couldn’t wait
They were coming and no one could stop it
Still way too early the doctors said to us
They’ll be preemies, but we’ve done this a bit.
They had the incubators and special stuff
I had no idea what they intended to do
But like they would ever after that day
My twins said we’ll make fools out of you.
They were both six pounds and 10 ounces
And over twenty one inches long
Which was awfully small for my family
But I though the doctors would break out in song.
They were amazed they could be so big so soon
And said if full term the weight would have been close to ten
But they were about as healthy as any baby could be
And my wife said I’m never doing that again.
