Winter

Dave Oakes

Sometimes the snowflakes float down
Like white rose petals floating on the air
Other times they are hurled by the wind like bullets
On those days, outside only the most foolish dare.
Flakes of snow just keep floating or blowing
Until the ground becomes covered in a sheet of white
With mound of snow all around looking like pillows
The snow shimmering like diamonds in the light.
Soon you are surrounded by an army of snowmen
And there are angels laying all over the ground
Snowballs are flying through the air once again
The air is filled with the music of children sounds.
Deer passing through the yard as they make their way
Going from one wooded area to another in search of food
Rabbit tracks can be seen almost anywhere in the yard
The snow doesn’t seem to bother them playing with their brood.
Cheeks start turning rosy red and hands so cold they feel frozen
Drive you inside to warm up for a while as you continue to look
Everything looks so naked and pure and beautiful in the snow
Never were words written well enough to describe it’s wonder in a book.
