i was tempted to strike them
“just wait” you said
so i waited

and after years
my hammer
became so heavy
i dropped it

“just wait” you said
and i did

but now
i’ve lost you

still
there are these bells

silver
and glass
and bronze
and china

all these bells
that
without a hammer
have become
beautiful
