Feeling Guilty
Beth Gibson
Bury him.......
With tears of rage
And cursed thought
Of the old blue Ford
That didn't see his wagging tail
Bury him.......
With his favorite toy
Your old green ball
He was never satisfied
Just to play in the yard
By a road, near a highway
By a speeding car.......
Bury him.......
With the leash
That you freed him of
Such a nuisance, letting him run
Forgetting that cars run too
On screaming hot wheels
next to four wobbly paws
Don't stand a chance
Bury him........
With belated apologies and worthless grief
With a heart full of guilt and a mind crushed
By the knowledge that you could
Have prevented it all--and didn't
Bury your dog.........
And hope that someone else
Doesn't make
That same mistake.
