THE UNFORGIVEN

I stepped into darkness,
in my heart and mind.
You never could accept me, and
I was your just embarrassment,
I was your wild child
and made many mistakes,
I was not your golden child
and did it my own way and
the black sheep of the family are not
exactly welcomed back into the fold.
I threw reality into the family
circle and am your shame.
I chose the road less travelled,
found a dead end
after the fork in the road, and
couldn’t look back, or turn around.
So, I made a path that I
could completely call my own.
But, you abandoned me, your little outcast,
and my choices still haunt
me no matter where I go.
So, I’ve been searching, and am older now
and discovered that if I
couldn’t find what I was
seeking within myself, I’d
never find it on the outside.
And when I stepped out of
the darkness, into life, and tried to prove
I was good for something,
you still saw me as nothing
but a whore and drug addict, and
a waste of time and space.
So, in the end, nothing has
changed in your eyes, and I
remain the unforgiven.
