The cigarette

Philip Madden

My grandmother would often light a
cigarette, place it in an ashtray and
then watch it burn down to the butt.
Unsmoked and untouched it would burn
itself away, disappearing into nothingness.

I would try to understand the reason
for this unnecessary waste,but being
young I was looking into a tarpit on
a dark, moonless night
