A Sonnet on Re-reading the Greek Classics

Many of the allegedly educated mock the mores
of those they call trailer trash or even worse names
Thses same people bemoan the lack of knowledge of the classics,
saying that the Greeks were the basis
for Western civilization as we know it
And so I decided to re-read Homer
Ah!
The stories . . .
of an inordinate amount of drunkennes and gluttony,
of brawls and even wars because someone was dissed,
of brawls and even wars over a woman,
of gods and mortals fucking their mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers,
of them having children by several different men or women
I guess you could call Homer
the Jerry Springer of his day
