Coal&Gold
Michelle Greenblatt
Today I reached for the coal
instead of the gold
; today I split the baby in half. No
one seemed to mind the vivisected
baby, it was the knife they spoke of
on the news. a curved blade, pilfered
from the local slaughterhouse.
meanwhile— all this
time all this long long time
? did I say dawn I must have said dawn
the mountains echo the sun’s ventriloquism
its sonorous booming rebuff of silence.
*
I had a vision of this prologue
more than once, pierced
fontanel of the sun leaking bloody
light all over my bed.
