Drinking Coffee

Janet Kuypers
6/11/06

I don’t like coffee,
when asked to give a one word description
I’d say horrendous

I think the smell is bad
my husband makes it too strong
he tries to stuff as much bas taste and smell
into one cup of caffeine
as he can

but my parents make coffee in the morning
they make “Kuypers grade”
as my husband calls it

it’s not that strong
and the taste isn’t that awful
you know, if you have to drink coffee

but the only time I drink coffee
(other than when it’s spiked with a ton of liquor)
is when I’m in Florida
especially on days that aren’t too sunny
maybe a little windy
and having something warm
when watching people play tennis
at the public courts
would be a little treat

I remember doing that in Florida
maybe going for a walk first
after having my usual breakfast
of a toasted bagel sandwich
with tomatoes and alfalfa strouts

(sorry
I like bagels
and alfalfa sprouts are supposed to
help reduce cholesterol
and the tomatoes in Florida
are the best)

but after going out and seeing
that it’s a little cool outside
I’d come back and get a cup of coffee
put thirteen drops of
Sweet n’ Low liquid sweetener in it
because mom has a bottle of liquid Sweet n’ Low
then I’d walk across the street
and sit down on the benches
to watch people play tennis

other people sit there too,
so tennis players would switch turns
revolving on and off the courts
so everyone could have their turn playing
but otherwise I’d be alone there
watching people play
and I’d watch the steam from my coffee cup
rise into the Florida atmosphere
where here the coffee
tasted a little milder
and a little sweeter
and it wasn’t a burden to drink
near my mom once again*
