One Day in a City Like This

Janet Kuypers
1/23/24

When we were traveling through Boston,
we stopped at the now-tv-famous Cheers bar
to take our picture in front of the front door,
you know, so people would know we were there.
We were soaking wet since it had been raining,
but we didn’t care, it was our only day in Boston...
But still, we followed all the painted red lines
on the streets for historical landmarks, even
stood in the torture devices on the sidewalks,
took pictures everywhere. Because, as I said,
you need a record to prove you were there.

Eventually, we drove to Harvard campus,
took pictures of ourselves looking “intelligent” —
looking upward, hands under our chin,
poised in thought, looking as tacky as possible.

But when you travel across the country
to see your best friend and you only have
one day in a city like this, then you
stomp through the puddles from visiting
one unforgettable sight to the next, and,
most importantly, you laugh, a deep-down
in your belly laugh — the same way you did
for all those years with your best friend,
elatedly, joyfully, as if you were never apart.
