Beach Poets August 31th 2008 (08/31/08)

Former features poets at Beach Poets are selected to read this day, for the celebration of 18 years of Beach Poetry (as Kuypers has been a feature at Beach Poets on 08/14/05 , 08/05/07 and 07/13/08). Because there is a large number of poets showing up for this event, all featured writers are asked to read three pieces, so unlike past shows from Kuypers with Beach Poets (where she used many shorter pieces), Kuypers selected three more substantial gripping poems for this event. Beach Poets was created by award-winning poet and playwright, Cathleen Schandelmeier and was originally held at North Ave. Beach and earned Schandelmeier the title “Poet Laureate of North Ave. Beach” by the Chicago Tribune in 1996. Presently located at Loyola Beach, on Greenleaf and the lake (two blocks south of Touhy), Beach Poets takes place from 4:00 pm-6:00 pm every Sunday afternoon in the summer. When going to the Beach Poets open mic (though there isn’t a mic on the beach...) and features, look for the Beach Poets tent South of the Heartland’s “Stand in the Sand” and bring poetry (your own or someone else’s) for the round-robin open mic. Children and pets are always welcome, so everyone in Chicago was told to bring the bug spray and the SPF lotion for this fun Sunday at the beach! It was actually a really nice day at the beach for this performance, and Kuypers was the final feature of this event. Kuypers usually looks for pieces about anything from the beach (and water), and this was usually her theme for past features with Beach Poets. But for this feature (where Kuypers was the final featured reader), Kuypers chose titles of poems that incluided years (since Beach Poets had existed since 1990). So... on to the show: |

Kuypers also read additional poems live at the Beach that day when the camera was turned so you could see more of not only the beach but also of Lake Michigan. This camera angle made the microphone catch a lot of wind, but there are more poems from this series of Conversations poems and poems with years in the titles that were read that day. |
