CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

Michael H. Brownstein

The river’s shield of ice
slides beyond the shadow spirit,
that place away from branches,
before the levy, a house left behind.

Current holds to rhythm like electricity,
a linkage to head and breath,
the suddenness of a Mayan heart-kiss.
We must stop to gather bark

and bank wood, build a fire, boil water
for chocolate and tea. Spirit shadow
moves across snowbanks. We watch,
warm our feet, listen to ice break over ice.
