Teacher

Kathy Egbert

Owl eyes,
Powered by hidden lasers,
Raspy voice of an old film star,
Smoky with wisdom.

She broke off pieces of her own life
And gave them to us,
Pieces of a larger loaf,
Lest we starve.

She taught us verbs and poetry,
With questions instead of answers.
Warned us about Hesse and Camus,
While handing over their books.

Taught the hardest lesson:
That women could be smart and ambitious
And still rock their babies.
But that it wasn't easy.
