Hummingbird

Robert S. O’Brien

Jewel of the sky,
sigh.
Put your head against my chest
and rest
before you fly.

I watched you grow,
then let you go
to mine my garden
for sweetness Ñ
pie-oh-my.

Will you be safe again
in the rain?
Where do you go
when hard winds blow?
Where do you go, and why?

IÕl never know, it seems,
except in dreams
where you hide,
what winds you ride ...
be well, be safe, jewel of the sky.
