rest stop

Dan Sicoli

it rains dark rain
and the second hand sweeps like
the thumping windshield wiper
pushing aside a relentless past

whispered lightning flashes
along with road signs
“vacancy” and “open 24 hours”
neon colors bleed in beads
between hot white flickers

power lines are limp dandelions
and the second hand
having ceased its rotation
allows morning to awaken alone

rhodium

Dan Sicoli

like a baby highway
silverfish
speed of electricity

like confused moths
darting madly about a light bulb

stop
i smear grease of silver
death on my fingertip

i heard her say these words

Dan Sicoli

she said my eyes were more than just puppies
her ego, more than sky
she said her auburn hair was more than just logic
and i had reasons like iron

it’s her voice that has attached me
digging in the warmth of her vowels
she’ll call a dream a lie
and me a ghost haunting the mundane

she said my eyes were black olives
and her blood, more than a blanket for the soul
she claimed we could all devour
the beating of the moment
if only to sustain
the selfishness of survival

ornamental

Dan Sicoli

my lover embeds jewelry with song
notes sound from her bracelets and stones
timbre of her earrings resonates
our moment dripping gold onto her fingers

my lover tumbles down in a shower of scales
her necklace
an orchestra of jade and silver
swinging in afterthought
as a clef spears a beating heart

end piece

Dan Sicoli

with unyielding precision my lover quizzed
for secrets to reveal myself

is your tongue often more naked than testicle?

does the moon ingest your innocence?

will i be your final thought as you lay dying?

10,000 messages alit in a black sky
and i could not say

she left me with a ticket for the mystery train
and headed south

birthday

Dan Sicoli

sucking its last breath
and ash turns to sky
perhaps the best seedless
in seven years

sitting on the roof
we blow it out to
george washington clouds
as fireworks
burst on the fourth of
july
