Being Cyndi Lauper

Marisa Cimbal

After Diana Goetsch

When I first saw Cyndi Lauper I was alone in
my bedroom and she was on MTV singing in the music video,
Girls Just Want to Have Fun.
She was not laying in her bed trying to squeeze into her Guess jeans, she was dancing
in the streets, with big messy orange hair and wearing
a flouncy prom dress with a big flowing skirt,
big top hat, big silver belts, big earrings, big bangles.
And I was trying to be small. As I dissected every inch
of myself, she did not care.
She was a girl like me. Talking on the phone with her girlfriends, and
telling her mother she wanted to have fun. Doing things that I
would do. But so full of truth, she knew,
she revealed me. Some might say that she was wearing a costume
or playing a role. No, that was me.
She would do more music videos, True Colors, Time After Time, She Bop
were some I remember. She was always fantastically dancing,
with big colorful hair and red lipstick. Her distinctive female voice,
sometimes sounding like a child and sometimes like a rockstar,
but always clear and powerful, conveying acceptance and strength.
