Weekday Mornings at the pharmacy

Eliot Singer

I’m at the pharmacy counter early one day.
The pharmacy is quiet during the weekday mornings.
There’s a slow parade of mental patients and welfare mothers,
who pick up their medicines which treat a host of grandiose maladies.
The mental patients leave to wander the streets,
while the welfare mothers are with their brats,
each child crying for a cheap toy from one of the discount aisles.
This is a disappearing sideshow of the impoverished and disenfranchised,
until the afternoon approaches,
then the rest of the deluded masses begin to overload the counter.
