The Other Side

Shuffling painfully along
an old man looks down,
for butt ends, scraps of food
a lost coin, a lottery ticket.
Trainers, too large,
flop erratically, up then down
on the burning sidewalk.
A grimy baseball cap,
pointing sideways,
gives an oddly, twisted look.
An old dog limps
a few steps behind,
eyes glazed, tongue lolling
from a toothless jaw.
Best to pass on the other side.
