Create your own boy

Jasper de Villiers

They say I’m the prettiest girl
Made to become a beautiful wife
But it doesn’t feel right.

I’ve built a cocoon
With enough room,
The walls are papery and thin
The outside is a camouflage
Made of a mirage.
I’m feminine on the outside...
That’s what they want, right?

In my head I think
I could be less pretty and pink.
My hair could be shorter,
My clothes baggier,
I could have less of a chest
Or a waist
This cocoon doesn’t fit anymore.

Carve your own boy,
I whisper,
shave that hair.
Have a sense of self,
Don’t doubt,
Fit a collection of too-big clothes,
Consider a name change.
Look your age.

Carve your own boy,
Out of clay and hair spray,
Chisel in hand,
Take a stand.
Hold onto those names,
Keep their words at bay.
And, hey,
One day
You will hold that needle,
A disciple of your own ideals.
The real Michelangelo.
A statue, brand new.

Change.
Morph,
Grow.

Create your own boy.
Spread out your wings and fly.
