Chinatown, NYC, 7 AM

Deidre Sullivan

Next to their grocery carts
overflowing with clear
garbage bags of
bottle and cans,

two elders, a man and a woman,
crepe-skinned, clear-eyed,
under loose sweatpants and
faded T-shirts
that misspell famous
American colleges

point swords
to the morning sky
and then to the
city cement,

Sky to cement
Sky to cement

very slowly,
in sync,

He follows her
He matches her

Moving their weapons and bodies
As if through a light syrup

They carve
shapes in the air,
keeping time,

adding
additional steps
as memory allows,

honoring the day,
remembering their
battles,
how they got to this place,

a morning exercise
in a Chinatown park,

before they return to
their shopping cart,
their bottles and cans,
ready to be recycled.
