Dirt Angel

Deidre Sullivan

Yesterday my neighbor,
a former Miss New York State,
who wears old age
like a raincoat,
made Snow Angels in the dirt.

I was checking on my tomatoes
and saw her

lie down on the new ground
waiting to be seeded,
as if she were at the beach, but without
a towel, in an old one-piece, spreading her wings
flying in the topsoil
pushing her heavy arms up and down
in the mulch.

She lifted herself up,
rising out of the dirt, shedding
wet leaf parts and soil in bits,
twigs in her hair, body warpainted with mud
and circled her creation.

Her mark, her imprint, her earth dent—
the head, the wings, the legs— became
an empty mold waiting to be filled up
so that

pebbles and shale might
also rise
from the earth,
and maybe,
someday,

even a tree.
