Crawford/Westgate Road

Cami Rumble

A bird may love a fish...

Seems like I’m always halfway in-between,
Walking this forsaken road where
Weeds sprout through the broken pavement.

The grasses grow as tall as my shoulder,
Unchecked,
Past the metal arms chained together.

Trash spills from abandoned shopping carts,
Critters scurry from my steps
When I crouch to admire a wild sunflower.

Ahead sits the new development,
Houses packed so tightly they might be
Colorful dominoes in a tin.

Behind me sprawl the half-acre lots
Portioned long ago,
Houses sighing toward decrepitude.

Which leaves me in the middle,
Walking my asphalt treadmill
Straight into the setting sun.

In my past is country, in my heart is city,
Neither one fits anymore
And I’m forever stuck in between.

...but where would they live?

I suppose they would live here,
Halfway to or halfway from,
Depending on how you look at it.
