Keeping Hydrated

Janet Kuypers

8/2/25

Once when I was working as a bartender, I poured drinks for a bunch of doctors that were all wanting to drink a ton, so after a while they asked me what I was doing after my shift. I said, I’m going to bed. And they said, no, you’re not. We’re gonna keep drinking... and you’re gonna join us and drink at our place.
I thought, these people are doctors, they probably have some good stuff, and hey, it’s free liquor, so why not go to their place. And when I get there, there are doctors and nurses, there were maybe 15 people in the house and they’re all so intent on drinking that they decide that everyone should also have saline, so they can got a bunch of mini portable carts to hold up saline bags and every one of the doctors injected themselves and walked around with roller carts for their saline. So that they could continue to drink. And as they say, remain hydrated. After I see all this, they offered to inject me with a saline IV drip.
And I thought, well, these guys are doctors, they have to know what they’re doing, so I said, okay, why not, and they put an IV in my arm, and they gave me a little cart with wheels holding up a saline bag so that I was being hydrated while I was drinking.

I guess it was a late night, and yeah, I kept drinking, but um, at least I was hydrated. So it was okay.

I woke up the next morning at their place, and I was not the only one who had a syringe in their arm. And I thought, well, I don’t want to disturb anyone. I’ll get this needle out of my arm, and maybe I’ll just go home.
