Underhanded Subversion
          of Freedom of Press

Janet Kuypers

8/8/25

Recently heard of our entertainer-in-chief
Trying to destroy the news media again —
In is style, he sued CBS and 60 Minutes
Because of how they overly edited Kamala
Harris quotes after airing on Face the Nation.

Hmmm, sounds to me like another rich guy
Who regularly gets into financial fiascos
Trying to get richer. The FCC even agreed
That these were “normal editing practices
and not malicious” as Trump alleged, but
Without hearing more, I heard Paramount
Global (who owns CBS) agreed to pay a
Sixteen million dollar settlement to make
This all go away.                Now, I listened
To the two quotes, and boy, they really did
Sound different, so who’s really to blame.

Now that national television networks are
Bought out by massive global corporations,
It seems there is now no such thing as local
news or mom and pop stores any longer.
Who can afford to make a difference for the
Individual when your corporate big brother
Can offer what you think you need so cheap...
                                                                Right?

Maybe that’s why I don’t pay myself for my
Full-time job of editing, designing and pub-
lishing poetry lit mag books. Because, I mean,
Who wants that, anyway?    Just the individual.

Now, I make a conscious effort to never
Watch streams from any social media, and
I know my small dose of BBC News and CNN
Is left-leaning, but it’s less left-leaning than
Multiple Sclerosis NBC, or FOX News — which
By court order cannot call what they produce
“news”. I know that almost all comedy is
Left-leaning, but conspiracy theorists
Cannot help but connect the obvious dots
When, less than three weeks after the
60 Minutes settlement (and talk show host
Steven Colbert calling it “the Big Beautiful
Bribe”), CBS cancels their night talk shows.

CBS execs can say the show’s losing money.
They can say they like Late Night with Steven
Colbert
... We can then hear about a merger
Between multiple global conglomerates,
Paramount and Skydance, that needed
60 Minutes
to settle, as well as Skydance
Promising to eliminate DEI (that’s Diversity,
Equity and Inclusion, by the way) so that
Trump’s interests are also met — and they’ll
Do this for a minimum for two years.

                                                            Oh, man,
I’ve tried to avoid getting myself muddied in
These waters, but Journalism Janet here
Doesn’t like global companies kowtowing
To the desires of the leader of a nation...
I Don’t know how many times I’ve heard
Leftists calling Trump a fascist, and I have
Never wanted to say that, that’s just going
Too far* — but when I see this, I wonder
What “too far” really is with our government.

Benito Mussolini was the father of Fascism.
So was Stalin; Hitler and his propaganda
Minister mastered the same art — of first
Controlling the media.        I don’t know how to
Stop the overtaking of our Freedom of the
Press...     All my adult life, in my spare time,
I printed saddle-stitched booklets of what
“The Man” wouldn’t mass print, because
These alternative voices needed to be
Heard, and needed to be shared. To this
day I still share the words of the young, the
Old, the imprisoned, the oppressed, the
repressed, the abused, and the ones with
No other place to turn to get their message
Out.    As I see the foundations of our rights
Crumbling, I don’t know what else to do.
