Weeds and Flowers

Weeds and Flowers

Weeds and Flowers was started in 1998, using the talents of guitarists like Matt Weedman (along with the occasional work of Lisa Parker on the guitar) to cover well-known songs as well as delve into new songs. This Colorado band did most of their recording over the lead singer’s birthday in Boulder. Hopefully their strong versions of songs by R.E.M., Peter Gabriel or Sinead O’Connor will make up for their short history working together.

The lead singer had even told the rest of the band that she could record the vocals at another date, but they insisted that she sing while they played. It was a good thing, too - the lead singer almost died in an accident about fifteen days later.

Matt Weedman is a guitarist who lives in Colorado, keeps too many compact discs in his car trunk, and well, in general is a fun loving guy.

Matt knew and worked with Janet Kuypers through friends. Janet Met Lisa Parker through Matt Weedman, and Lisa possessed the same uncammy ability of picking out tunes and being able to play them without trying.

Their work is collected on one unreleased compact disc called The Beauty and the Destruction. It contains covers of anything from Paul Simon from the seventies to Culture Clue, Paul Young, The Eurythmics, INXS, or even Yaz. More recent covers include Morrissey, Green Day, R.E.M. or Peter Gabriel.

Their CD of these tracks is also available on sale right here, is you are interested...

This was originally by Sinead O’Connor. Matt Weedman (the lead guitarist) suggested this song, and it turned out marvelously - especially when the head singer had never even heard of the song before and learned it in ten minutes before recording the track.
And in the video footage, recorded in 2000, Matt is not present.

This was originally by Paul Young. Deciding to go through the 1980s rampage of hits for songs to cover, the lead singler also remembered her nephew, when he was a toddler, exclaiming repeatedly,
Every time you go ... You take a piece of me ... AWAY!
So for that alone they thought it would be fun to cover this song.

This was originally by They Might be Giants,, off the album Lincoln. Deciding to play a well-known song with a different spin, they opted to play this rock-and-roll styled tune with a more soulful, slower beat.
And in the video footage, recorded in 2000, Matt is not present.

You Are The Everything

This was originally by Paul Young. The only thing the lead singer could think of with this song was that a friend of hers - a woman from high school with a mohawk and a penchant for throwing bopoks at her sister’s picture CD collection, ADORED Paul Young. Wait, she also claimed to have slep with the lead singer of INXS while they were on tour once. Ah, the life of a fan...
Come to think of it, Paul Simon once played this song live on television with George Michael. Okay, so that is all they can remember of this song.
