Water Ban
Jeff McMahon
Maple street church parking lot
by the old Cumberland farms
bathed in orange spatterings
on the last day of the water ban
Signs read “Voluntary,” as water
flowed into the sewers
and the lakes and rivers
swallow the whispy clouds.
The Mill Pond looked like a turf
and no one would have guessed
the boy who drowned their last winter
thought the ice was glass
and the clear light passed through
as he sprinted down the hill
to the frozen snow
and stared up
at the sun sliding away.
