Should I Let the Spider Live?

Shocked frozen by the switch-light
he watches me while I watch him.
Sometimes—frantic! —he scurries to a crack.

Other times I’ve crushed him into a fold of tissue
and flushed him down the loo. Sometimes
I’ve let him be. And sometimes, too,
there’s a fatal accident.

Once or twice I gently scooped him up from where,
thirsty, he’d trapped himself in the tub’s bottom
and moved by grace left him—stunned
—outside.

I’ve become an unsought arbiter of little lives
dependent on my momentary moods and sullen whims;
yet even I—the Executioner’s Hand—am clueless
when the webs of fate decide.
