Poem from “I Canti”, Bastogi Editions, 2016, in English

Paolo Maria Rocco

From the roofs of town houses one is inclined
to consider that the altitude sickness is not valid
a pause to reflect, that everything is not in a vacuum
of the inscrutable heart. Like the air that never stops
to catch his breath and at times it decides to whirl
between the antennas, I see you sucked into the tar
that you climb on the cables to see after the asphalt
if you like the succession on this side too
dizzying ambushes: there are countless humps
of which we are surrounded, and at breakneck speed
convex surfaces, from any side

Look at the hills. The viewpoint is unleashed in the eye
inexorable, inadequate for movement
quick as to the senile mask
the unknown vastness. It cannot be urbanized
you said the heart inside as it is worn
to sight, it turns back on itself
the thought that starts to err. I saw
the enemy sky and still above the theories
of perfect harmonies I guess you now discover
in the middle of the alley the young people of the street
revive girls’ skirts with a glance
