The Squalor of Her Words

Susie Gharib

She vilifies.
From every word she utters oozes a trail of slime
that rankles in one’s mind
for numberless days and nights.

She cries,
endowing each word with a burst of shards
that lacerate each nerve and twitching eye
for the rest of one’s life.

She defies,
imparting to every word an amount of spite
that penetrates the deepest recesses of one’s heart
for an indefinite time.

There are no detergents or disinfectants for verbal dirt.
I know my ears cannot filter linguistic filth,
so I decide to counter her malicious missiles
with a tranquil smile,
which sends a shiver down her spine.
