The Harrison Avenue Trail

Richard K. Williams

At the end of my street
behind the houses occupying
the lots on the cross street.

There is a short hiking trail.
The Harrison Avenue Trail
named after the street it parallels.

It wanders beside
the Cobbosseecontee Stream
for just under a half mile.

It’s an easy walk
wide, tree lined.
Some old growth
some with damage
by resident beavers.

Birds dart from branch to branch
seagulls scream, swoop, and
paddle against the current.

Osprey soar overhead
searching for fish.
To bring back to their nests
on top of the power poles
that line the far bank.

There is a granite dam
collapsed in its center.
The huge blocks scattered
askew, submerged
in the tumbling current.

In stark contrast to
the two other dams
and spillways still standing.

I am always drawn
to the brick and granite ruins
of a building near the trails center.

Only three walls remain
none of them complete
overgrown with vines and weeds.

Fallen and crumbling
at the water’s edge
some past place of business.

Abandoned, forgotten
with a lonely feeling.
More forlorn even,
than the collapsed dam.

Wedged into the bank
cast deeply in shadow.
A three-sided mystery
I attempt to solve
every time I travel
the Harrison Avenue Trail
