Dream On

Ian Mullins

I shouldn’t dream
the way I dream.
Should rage righteously
against the breeders
and the builders,
knowing there’s nothing more
to this life than decoy
and dissonance,
building stones of faith
upon figments of sand.

But I dream
and I distract, mix up
the porridge knowing it will
do me no good to keep
on stirring. No salt will sugar
a kinder life, salvage these bones
from primordial soup:

but the math is deadly dull,
while dreams freeze suns. And if
I must go on – as it seems I must –
I would rather dream upon
the minutes than die upon the hour.

A surrender to ego, or a denial
of same? All is foul and filth;
but I need not be
