The Guys Walk in All Nonchalant Like

    They could be vice cops or bad guys or both. They sure aren’t customers. They’re wearing black hats and long black coats. They’re wearing black from head to toe, except for the white socks, and I’m thinking, yah, they’re vice cops, they have to be vice cops. Who else wears white socks with black shoes? A dead giveaway. Then the drunk on the stool next to me starts to whistle “Lullaby of Birdland” off-key, just like Tarkovsky did in The Killers. Suddenly, one of the guys in black leans over the bar and whispers in the bartender’s ear. I can’t hear what he says, but I eye the exit sign. Then they’re out of there. Boy, they had me. I down my shot and beer; head for the door
