Before you could
rust like this car
you vowed to be a
continent away from this
hub-cap size town
whose two or three
factories that made
the rivets that
stapled fin-tailed
beasts like this but
also tried to crucify
punks like you who
sneered so much
in the rear view
mirror of this Chrysler
or was it Cadillac that
would never again run
but you swore you would leave
a print of your pout
while you pretended
to out-drive a world
that was chasing you
in your imagination

didn’t matter

because in a late 1950s
Cadillac or was it Chrysler
that was never going
to leave the bank
of a creek you had
already imagined
driving beyond
a cracked jaundiced
bird-shit speckled
windshield that would
always be this city’s
horizon
