WASH AND DRY
Judith F. Blee-Ramsey
Into the washer I throw
all the words I could have said,
should have said and
would have said.
Hot water, cold rinse; I add
soap, bleach and fabric softener,
slam the door closed
and turn the machine on.
Inside I hear the drone of the
agitator pumping and churning,
driving the water down and up
washing away the possibilities.
After the spin cycle stops,
I pull out every missed opportunity,
wrung out, and toss into
the empty dryer drum.
The gentle heat evaporates
any lingering regrets
over words not spoken
when it mattered most.
