forever I wanted to be married just once
my life didn’t turn out that way
brilliant morning light spread out
across the blue sky like a new tune
guitar strings being plucked softly
one at a time
one at a time

when I was eleven my scout troop
hiked 25 miles
across a level field
prairie flowers
on the canal bank
on our way to cahokia mounds
water reflected fiery sunshine
like antelope leaping
