Genesis Twenty-TwoJanet Kuypers2/2/19
Living in this desert land is never easy,
And I want to do everything I can
but the only dictator who has ruled
is so tyrannical, so torturous, even
I know of how once, many years ago,
almost everyone, and more recently
not far from here — I heard this
This is why I try to do everything I can
even when his demands seem so absurd,
Recently, a few of his goose-stepping
and I was afraid of what they were going
But they came to me like angels at first,
the dictator asked me to do, and if I did
in the dictator’s favor. “These are the words
said to me, so I eagerly asked what
Now, I always thought this dictator
told me that to win his favour I had to kill
But the “angels’” expressions never changed, my son, at my own hand, must die.
Now, you may hear this story and think
but no one thinks of the suffering
that me and my wife may have salvation
as long as I committed this one truly
would never, ever want to do. This tortured
this was the only thing I could ever do.
that was far away, so no one would know
only son. So a few days later I asked
an offering, so we could be at peace.
‘oh, how I love him so, I still cannot believe
I could think as I was preparing myself
And when we got to the farther mountain
my son even asked what we were going
my heart, I took a rope and bound
I grabbed a large knife I brought along,
that is when I heard the henchmen
They said unto me, “Lay not thine hand upon
They knew I would do this one heinous act,
that I feared him so much, so deeply,
Yes, this is the story of how the people
can still be tormented this way. Am I
was willing to be as heinous as he?
This is what I battle in my mind now,
what I’m truly willing to do, to be —
