“The tone of Down in the Dirt magazine seems to be a snarky, witty commentary about things the the way they really are, rather than the politically correct ramblings of conformists striving for a pat on the head.”
— Julie A Martin
Down in the Dirt contributor

Down in the Dirt is a source of inspiration and a place where faint voices of the oppressed, unrepresented and unprivileged can be heard.”
— Eugene Soukharnikov, Czech Republic

“The arts are and will always remain an important means to speak about the world we live in. Reading submissions, encouraging writers, and ensuring the future of the arts through publications such as Down in the Dirt is an immense contribution toward that end.”
— J L Higgs

There was also an expanded 2/14/18 marathon interview with the editor (with many more links to book and CD releases), where she explained the process on what happens to all submissions when accepted for publication. But if you didn’t have that much time for that lengthy past interview, then read answers to Six Questions for Janet Kuypers, Editor, Down in the Dirt magazine.

Though we receive requests for this, Down in the Dirt does not review books or magazines.

Ordering Down in the Dirt
All issues released in 2010 are sold directly through the printer, so customers do not send checks to Scars Publications directly. To order 2010 issues, go directly through the printer to place their order. Anyone who wants to see their writing in an older issue (v013 9/04 through v077 12/09) re-released as a 6" x 9" ISBN# book, let us know of your interest in ordering the issue as a perfect-bound book. We would be thrilled to re-release the volume if people are interested in a formal book version of the past issues.

All magazine published from Scars Publications are released on the web — as a free downloadable PDF file (e-book, or e-issue), as well as on a web page. In this way people can enjoy the magazine on the Internet for free.
Down in the Dirt magazine originally started as an ezine only, but became available as a print issue to people interested in owning a print copy of this electronic magazine (four years after the magazine started). Down in the Dirt magazine has made every effort to continue to have issues available for free online. When Down in the Dirt magazine recieves so many short stories, print issues often appear more cluttered with smaller typefaces in our efforts to place more material in each issue. (In actuality, the Internet issues are often easier to read and cleaner looking than the print issues, when you can even jump from the Table of Contents in each web page issue to the writing of your choice...) Print issues are offered to people who are interested in keeping a hard copy for their own records, but since over the years Down in the Dirt magazine has always been available primarily as an e-zine for free on the web, free print copies are not given away.
Because all magazines published from Scars Publications are released on the web (as a free downloadable PDF file in the past, and as a web page), Scars Publications does not pay contributors (and many have said that being published is payment enough), and it is always been the policy of Scars Publications to not give away free print issues.
Scars Publications also offers (as a free service) all accepted writers their writing posted in the writings section of http://scars.tv (direct link http://scars.tv/cgi-bin/framesmain.pl?writers), which is probably a very popular service in our publishing options, because every accepted writer can have their writing expressly in their own web page to show to friends. Starting in the second half of 2010, Scars Publications has also released issues of cc&d magazine and Down in the Dirt magazine as 6" x 9" ISBN# books (which in 2011 have been appearing more and more in searches at amazon.com).
