Unrestrained Opportunity,
and Fighting for Freedom

Janet Kuypers
6/2/19, written on the day many Chinese people
protested to protect the “Goddess of Democracy ”,
a miniature Statue of Liberty, in Tiananmen Square

Thirty years ago,
one hundred thousand
Chinese citizens
blocked ten thousand
Chinese soldiers
from entering Tiananmen
Square in Beijing,
because the Chinese people
wanted to protect
the miniature Statue of
Liberty on display
in Tiananmen Square, because
these people
believed in freedom. I now think
back to the man
who believed in peace, who
went to Chinese
prison for it, who became a
Nobel Peace Prize
winner for believing in peace,
and... and...
and I look back on what we
now have —
and now that I think we live
in the lap of all
we claim we want, I then
have to wonder.
Now that we feel comfortable
in our freedom,
do we know what freedom
really means.
And if we thought that our
freedom was in
jeopardy, would we know how
to fight for it.
Or, after all this time, would
we even remember
what freedom really means.
