On July 31st 2009, Janet Kuypers performed this feature at at Mercury Cafe (1505 West Chicago Avenue, Chicago). The Key to Believing bear managed to sit on stage for this performance (like he did at the Chicago show called “One Acts”) and he got a cool view of the audience while Kuypers performed.
There were two cameras recording this show, but since only one of them showed the Key to Believing bear, we are only going to highlight one camera from this show (where you can see the Key to Believing bear all the time). The Key to Believing bear also has to give props to both Janet Kuypers (the writer of the novel and the creator of the Key to Believing bear, performing in this show her poetry and displaying her artwork) and John Yotko (who helped edit and wrote the preface for the novel the Key to Believing, who did the music for this show), since they have both taken pictures of the Key to Believing bear as he has traveled around the country.
Kuypers brought a projector for images from around the world to be displayed throughout the performance (which I got to sit at, and which also helped to block light from the outside front floor-to-ceiling windows facing Chicago Avenue during the show). This performance also featured prerecorded back-up music (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass, keyboard and even natural percussion) by John Yotko throughout her readings (and this is the first time John Yotko has created music for individual poems for a performance art show like this!).
