Oscar looked at the small Vietnamese girl
behind the cash register
and realized she was just one of
a thousand suicides in his life.
Watching Wheel of Fortune
she handed him some nickels and dimes
without saying a word.
He saw the grim look
in Pat Sajak’s eyes.
Now there’s a man on the edge.
A man ready to blow at any moment,
he thought.
He watched the doe-eyed cosmetologist
from Carlsbad wince
when she figured out there were no more
vowels to be had.
Tough luck lady.
Tough life.
He looked down at his hand on the
paper bag.
Cheap whiskey.
Cheap life.
